Fiona Stanley Hospital due to open in 2014 will become the new centre for cardiothoracic surgery services.
“Fiona Stanley Hospital will become the south metropolitan centre for cardiothoracic surgery comprising the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Service; Advanced Lung Disease Service; Pulmonary Hypertension Program; and WA Lung Transplant Unit,” Dr Hames
National and international evidence has proven better clinical outcomes as well as better patients care would be achieved for high-risk patients when complex services are delivered at one tertiary hospital.
To achieve these results cardiothoracic surgery & services such as advanced heart and lung failure would be relocated to this single specialized site with all the facilities specifically designed for the benefit of the patients and the community.
Health Minister Kim Hames said “the WA Government made the decision after extensive discussions with key clinicians from across the South Metropolitan Health Service”
Royal Perth Hospital would remain as the State’s Major adult trauma centre. Royal Perth is nationally renowned for trauma care with its fully accredited and purpose built services among the best.
Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital will continue to service the Perth Northern suburbs with cardiothoracic surgery and metropolitan trauma services. There is also potential for some cardiothoracic services to be contracted to Joondalup Health Campus.
